Dr Simon Abson is a Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon providing comprehensive spinal care to patients across Newcastle, the Hunter Region and Mid North Coast of New South Wales. He specialises in the assessment and treatment of a broad range of spinal conditions, including degenerative disorders, spinal deformity, trauma, tumours and paediatric spine conditions.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Dr Abson completed his schooling before moving to South Africa to undertake tertiary studies at the University of Cape Town. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Microbiology and Biochemistry, and completed Honours in Pharmacology. He subsequently moved to Australia, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sydney.
Following medical school, Dr Abson completed his orthopaedic fellow training through the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Australia before undertaking advanced subspecialty fellowship training in spinal surgery at the internationally recognised Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust in the United Kingdom. During his fellowship, he gained extensive experience in the management of both adult and paediatric spinal conditions, including scoliosis, complex spinal deformity, trauma and degenerative spinal disorders.
Dr Abson is committed to delivering patient-centred, evidence-based care through a multidisciplinary approach. He takes the time to thoroughly assess each patient's condition, clearly explain clinical findings and treatment options, and work collaboratively with patients to develop an individualised management plan. Recognising that many spinal conditions can be effectively managed without surgery, he focuses on achieving the best possible outcomes through a combination of expert surgical care, contemporary treatment techniques and coordinated multidisciplinary support.
In addition to his private practice, Dr Abson remains actively involved in the NSW Health system, including the provision of spinal trauma services and a dedicated Scoliosis clinic and operating lists at the John Hunter Hospital. He is also committed to medical education through the Australian Orthopaedic Association registrar training program and the ongoing advancement of spinal teaching and care for the NSW Health Hunter New England Area.
